The governor disclosed the engagement in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, highlighting discussions that touched on rail, road, water, and aviation—sectors he described as “matters of deep importance” to both Lagos and California.

Learning from California’s Model

The meeting, led by California’s Secretary of Transportation, Mr. Toks Omishakin, focused on sharing experiences and identifying opportunities for collaboration between Lagos and California.

Sanwo-Olu noted that California’s extensive transport network provides a strong model for Lagos, as the state continues to confront challenges of urban congestion, road safety, and limited mobility options.

“For us, the goal is clear. Lagos must continue moving toward a truly multimodal transportation system, where our people can travel safely, efficiently, and with more options. California’s experience offers valuable lessons, and I believe there is much we can share,” the governor wrote.

Lagos’ Push for Multimodal Transport

The governor’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts to expand Lagos’ transport infrastructure. Recent initiatives include:

  • The launch of the Lagos Blue Rail Line, part of the long-awaited rail mass transit system.
  • Expansion of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors across strategic routes.
  • Investments in ferry services to decongest roads and enhance water transportation.
  • Infrastructure upgrades at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport corridor to improve aviation connectivity.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised that these initiatives are part of a broader vision to integrate road, rail, water, and air travel, ensuring residents and businesses benefit from improved mobility and reduced travel times.

Strengthening International Partnerships

The governor also underscored the importance of forging global partnerships, noting that Lagos can gain significantly by learning from international best practices. California, being home to one of the largest and most complex transportation systems in the world, provides useful insights for Lagos as it strives to position itself as a modern megacity.

He stressed that Lagos will continue to seek collaborations that leverage technology, sustainability, and innovation, with the ultimate aim of delivering a transport system that meets the demands of its fast-growing population.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s meeting with the California State Transportation Agency underscores Lagos’ ambition to transform its mobility landscape into a world-class, multimodal system. By aligning with global partners and drawing on international expertise, Lagos aims to overcome its longstanding transportation challenges while preparing for the future of urban mobility.
