Simple Advice for Catholics Attending Mass
Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C)
Readings: Sirach 3:17-20, 25-29 | Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a | Luke 14:1, 7-14
1. Don’t Worry if You Don’t Understand Everything
Many Catholics go to Mass and leave confused because the readings or the priest’s homily feel too deep. That is okay. The most important thing is to open your heart to God and allow Him to plant His word in you, even if you don’t grasp all the details.

2. The Main Message This Sunday: Be Humble
The key word from today’s readings is humility. God is reminding us not to think too highly of ourselves. In church, in our homes, and in our daily lives, we should always remain simple and respectful, not proud or boastful.
- Sirach says: “The greater you are, the more you must humble yourself.”
- Jesus in the Gospel says: “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
So, even if you forget every other thing, remember this: God loves a humble heart.
3. Practical Ways to Live Humility This Week
- In church: Take the back seat sometimes, not because you are less important, but because you want to practise humility.
- At home: Respect your parents, siblings, and spouse. Don’t insist that your opinion is always right.
- At work or school: Don’t boast about your position or achievements. Instead, give credit to God and others.
- With the poor: Help people who cannot repay you. Share with the needy, even if no one notices.
4. Remember God’s Banquet
In the Gospel, Jesus used the image of a banquet. He said: when you invite people, don’t just invite your rich friends. Invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. Why? Because God Himself invites us to His heavenly banquet even though we cannot repay Him.
So, ask yourself: Who do I help or invite into my life? Only those who can pay me back, or also those who cannot?
5. How to Benefit from the Mass, Even Without Understanding Everything
- Listen for one simple phrase in the readings or homily and carry it in your heart. Today, that phrase could be: “Whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
- Pray silently after Communion: “Lord, make me humble like You.”
- Act on the Word: Don’t just hear it, practise it during the week.
Final Advice
Even if the preaching feels difficult, don’t give up. The Word of God is like seed — it may not show results immediately, but if you water it with prayer and practice, it will grow in your heart.
