Army Confirms Shooting Incident at Delta Estate

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that one of its personnel was involved in the fatal shooting of a young man during a confrontation at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Warri, Delta State.

According to a statement released on October 15, 2025, by Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade, Asaba, the incident occurred two days earlier, on October 13, following an altercation between a soldier on guard duty and a group of individuals who allegedly attempted to force their way into the estate without security clearance.

The Army explained that the confrontation turned violent after the group resisted identification checks, leading to a physical struggle that resulted in the death of one of the men identified simply as Ugo.

“The soldier acted in self-defence during the scuffle,” the Army stated. “The suspect was injured and rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.”

The Otu-Jeremi Police Division in Delta State was reportedly notified for further investigation.

Eyewitness Confusion and Public Outcry

While the Army has maintained that the deceased was a “suspected criminal,” Akahi News gathered that several residents of the DMLT Estate have disputed this description, insisting that the victim was well-known in the area and may have been involved in a misunderstanding rather than a criminal act.

Videos allegedly recorded after the incident have been circulating online, showing an agitated crowd accusing the soldier of using excessive force. Though the Army’s statement emphasised adherence to human rights principles, public reactions reflect growing frustration over recurring cases of extrajudicial killings and abuse of power by security operatives.

Human rights advocates and social commentators have called for an independent investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.

Calls for Accountability and Reform

Observers noted that incidents like the Warri shooting continue to erode public trust in the military, especially in non-combat situations. Analysts believe that while soldiers often face volatile encounters during security operations, the line between self-defence and excessive use of force remains blurred without effective oversight mechanisms.

According to reports monitored by Akahi News, civil society groups are urging the Army to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the matter comprehensively. They also advocate for stricter rules of engagement and psychological training for personnel stationed in civilian environments.

Army Appeals for Calm

The 63 Brigade Headquarters has urged residents of Delta State to remain law-abiding and to comply with established security checks. The military reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens while upholding their fundamental rights.

“Respect for human rights has always been prioritised in the discharge of our duties,” the statement concluded.

As investigations continue, Nigerians await clarity on the circumstances that led to the young man’s death — a tragedy that once again underscores the delicate balance between security enforcement and human rights protection in the country.
