Spanish Government Hints at World Cup Boycott if Israel Qualifies

Spanish Government Hints at World Cup Boycott if Israel Qualifies

By Joseph Iyaji

Spanish government officials have sparked controversy by suggesting that the national football team may opt out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel secures qualification. The statement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, following a recent United Nations (UN) ruling accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Patxi Lopez, spokesperson for the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), addressed the issue during a press conference, stating that Spain would “assess” its participation in the tournament should Israel qualify. “We will evaluate the situation at the appropriate time,” Lopez remarked, hinting at a potential boycott. He further noted, “What we want is for people to realise that if Israeli teams cannot take part in sporting events or Eurovision, some are starting to open their eyes.” His comments suggest a broader push to highlight concerns over Israel’s actions through international platforms like sport.

Israel’s national football team has not competed in a World Cup since 1970 but has a realistic chance of qualifying for the expanded 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Currently, Israel sits third in their UEFA qualifying group, level on points with Italy, who hold the play-off position. However, Israel have played one more match than the Azzurri, making their qualification prospects uncertain but plausible.

The UN’s recent commission of inquiry report, which accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, has intensified global scrutiny of the nation’s policies. Lopez’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among some Spanish officials to use high-profile events like the World Cup to make a political statement. This stance has already drawn mixed reactions, with some praising Spain’s commitment to human rights and others warning of the risks of politicising sport.

As the qualification process continues, the football world will be watching closely to see how Spain navigates this delicate situation. For now, Lopez’s comments signal a potential flashpoint in international sports, raising questions about the intersection of politics, morality, and competition.
