Tinubu Vanguard Suspends Support for APC, Cites Loss of Confidence in Ruling Party
A major political shift appears to be unfolding in Nigeria’s northern political landscape as the Tinubu Vanguard, a prominent political support group drawn from 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has announced the indefinite suspension of its activities and support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The decision was made public on Tuesday afternoon by the group’s Director-General, Hon. Kamilu Abdullahi Abubakar Maiganji, during a meeting convened to assess the organisation’s relationship with the APC-led administration.

“We Have Dropped the Broom” — Tinubu Vanguard
Addressing journalists and members of the group, Maiganji declared that the Tinubu Vanguard has formally distanced itself from the APC, stressing that the decision was not taken lightly.
“From today, we have dropped the broom,” Maiganji stated, in a symbolic reference to the APC’s party logo. “We have not resolved to join any other political party until we find a platform that truly upholds dignity, accountability and development.”
According to him, the group’s withdrawal reflects growing dissatisfaction with the current direction of governance and unfulfilled expectations following the 2023 general elections.
Role in Tinubu’s 2023 Victory
Akahi News gathered that the Tinubu Vanguard played a strategic role in mobilising grassroots support for President Tinubu and the APC during the last general elections. The group reportedly coordinated sustained radio and television programmes across Kano State and other parts of northern Nigeria to shape public opinion and drive voter participation.
Maiganji noted that these outreach efforts helped reframe political narratives in the North, encouraged political engagement among previously disengaged citizens, and contributed to electoral success for the APC at various levels.
“Our commitment then was driven by hope, belief in change, and confidence in the leadership we supported,” he said.
Growing Discontent Within Pro-Tinubu Blocs
Political analysts observe that the decision by the Tinubu Vanguard may signal deeper frustrations within some northern political blocs that initially backed President Tinubu’s candidacy. While the group stopped short of declaring support for any opposition party, its suspension of activities represents a significant symbolic setback for the ruling party’s grassroots structure in the region.
According to observers, such developments could influence future political alignments, especially as internal assessments of governance performance continue across party lines.
What Next for the Group?
Maiganji explained that the Tinubu Vanguard would remain politically observant while engaging in internal consultations to determine its next steps. He emphasised that any future alignment would depend on clear commitments to good governance, accountability, and people-centred development.
Akahi News learnt that members of the group are expected to hold further consultations across the northern states in the coming weeks to chart a new political direction.
A Signal to the Political Class
The suspension underscores a growing demand for performance-driven politics rather than loyalty based solely on party affiliation. Analysts believe the development serves as a message to political leaders that grassroots support cannot be taken for granted.
As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, the stance taken by the Tinubu Vanguard may shape conversations ahead of future electoral cycles.
