Traditional Worshippers Say Alaafin, Ooni May Be Under Spell Amid Renewed Clash

Rising Tensions Between Two Revered Monarchs
The Traditional Religion Worshippers Association in Osun State has expressed concern that the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, may be under a spell following the resurgence of hostilities between the two foremost Yoruba monarchs.
The association’s president, Oluseyi Atanda, stated that the recurring disputes signalled a spiritual imbalance, noting that traditionalists might need to perform special rituals to restore peace.
Traditionalists Call for Spiritual Intervention
According to Atanda, the disagreements between the revered monarchs have implications not only for their palaces but also for the stability of Yorubaland. He stressed that the conflict could attract negative spiritual consequences if not promptly addressed.
Echoing this sentiment, renowned poet and Ifa priest, Ifayemi Elebuibon, revealed that sacrifices had already been offered by traditionalists to restore harmony among Yoruba leaders. He emphasised that peace within traditional institutions was crucial for cultural unity and preservation.
Trigger of the Latest Dispute
The latest round of hostilities began on Monday after the Alaafin faulted the Ooni’s decision to bestow the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on businessman Dotun Sanusi. The title was conferred during the unveiling of 2geda, a Nigerian-owned social media and business networking platform, held on August 16 at Ilaji Hotel, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Reacting to the development, the Alaafin, through his media aide, Bode Durojaiye, issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni to withdraw the title or face consequences. The monarch argued that no traditional ruler other than the Alaafin of Oyo had the recognised authority to bestow titles covering the entire Yorubaland.
What This Means for Yoruba Unity
The clash has stirred debate among cultural custodians, political leaders, and the Yoruba public, many of whom fear that prolonged disputes between the two monarchs could erode unity in the region. Traditionalists believe that if reconciliation is not sought, the disagreement could widen divisions and weaken the authority of Yoruba royal institutions.
Atanda reiterated the association’s readiness to intervene spiritually, urging both monarchs to embrace dialogue, humility, and reconciliation.
