UMYU Governing Council Approves Major Promotions Across Academic Cadres

In a significant boost to academic excellence and institutional development, the Governing Council of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has approved the promotion of 19 academic staff members to the rank of Professor. The announcement was made on Saturday in Katsina through a statement issued by Nabila Dahiru-Anche, the Assistant Chief Information and Protocol Officer in the Office of the Vice Chancellor. According to the statement, the promotions take effect from October 1 and were endorsed during the Council’s 56th meeting held on November 27.

Details obtained by Akahi News indicate that the latest elevation exercise cuts across multiple academic categories. Beyond the 19 new Professors, the Council also approved promotions as follows:

  • 20 staff members to the rank of Reader (Associate Professor)
  • 31 promoted to Senior Lecturer
  • 17 elevated to Lecturer I
  • 26 upgraded to Lecturer II

In addition, 36 staff members were converted and upgraded to higher professional cadres, reflecting what observers describe as a comprehensive restructuring aimed at strengthening the university’s academic workforce.

Council Welcomes New Pro-Chancellor

The meeting also formally received the newly appointed Pro-Chancellor, Senator Hadi Abubakar-Sirika, who used the opportunity to reaffirm his commitment to the advancement of the institution. Akahi News gathered that Sirika met with leaders of the university’s four In-House Unions, pledging cooperation, loyalty and support in the collective push for academic and administrative progress.

Sirika reportedly assured stakeholders that he would work closely with management and unions to enhance the university’s growth, stability and national standing.

Improved Welfare: Cleaners’ Wages Increased by 100%

In a move widely praised by staff members, the Governing Council also approved a 100 per cent increase in the wages of UMYU’s cleaners. Journalists note that the decision underscores the institution’s commitment to staff welfare, especially for workers in lower-income categories whose contributions are crucial to maintaining a conducive learning environment.
