UNICAL Makes History: University of Calabar to Host 2026 NUGA Games After 35 Years

After more than three decades, the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) has officially announced the University of Calabar (UNICAL) as the host of the 2026 edition of the prestigious inter-university sports festival. This historic decision marks a triumphant return of the NUGA Games to the city of Calabar — 35 years after the last time the institution had the honour in 1990.
The announcement was made by Dr. Michael A. Ajibua, Acting President of NUGA, accompanied by Mr. Yunusa M. Bazza, Secretary-General, and Prof. Musa G. Yakasai, Chairman Technical. The delegation presented the hosting rights formally to Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, in a brief but memorable ceremony attended by members of the university management, the Local Organising Committee (LOC), and media partners including MediaVision Limited, Unical Radio, and NaijablaseTV.
UNICAL’s Facilities Impress NUGA Officials
Before the official declaration, the NUGA team embarked on an extensive tour of the facilities designated for the Games. The inspection covered the U.J. Esuene Sports Complex, where the delegation assessed the basketball and squash courts, swimming pool, table tennis arena, and main pitch.
The team also inspected St. Patrick’s College and conducted a detailed evaluation of the Abraham Ordia Stadium, tennis courts, multipurpose halls, and other sporting infrastructures within UNICAL’s campus.
One major highlight was the newly constructed tennis court, which Dr. Ajibua described as “the best in any Nigerian university.” He commended the university’s level of preparedness, noting that the facilities are 90% ready, and expressed confidence that UNICAL could successfully host the Games even within six months if required.
Prof. Yakasai also praised the university’s investment in sports infrastructure, remarking that “the spirit of NUGA has found a home in Calabar once again.”
State Government and Stakeholders Throw Their Weight Behind UNICAL
During a courtesy visit to the Cross River State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Agnes Atsu, the NUGA delegation received firm assurances of government backing. Hon. Atsu affirmed that the administration of Governor Bassey Otu would provide all necessary support to ensure the Games are a resounding success.
“This hosting right aligns perfectly with our people-focused agenda. Calabar is safe, ready, and excited to welcome thousands of young athletes from across Nigeria,” she said.
Other stakeholders, including Papa Dorn Cklaimz Enamhe, Executive Secretary of the UNICAL NUGA 2026 LOC, and Dr. Ikechukwu Henry, CEO of Hogis Hotels, hailed the announcement as a collective victory for the university and the state. Enamhe lauded Prof. Obi’s persistence and visionary leadership, which he said played a decisive role in securing the hosting rights.
