Wike Reacts as Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri Resigns from PDP, Calls It ‘Very Embarrassing’

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the resignation of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as both shocking and deeply embarrassing, Akahi News reports.

A Nigerian politician, Nyesom Wike, speaks during a media event, holding a microphone and gesturing, with greenery in the background.

Wike: “It Is Very Embarrassing”

Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Friday, Wike expressed disappointment over Diri’s sudden exit from the opposition party, especially given his leading role in the forthcoming PDP elective national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025.

“It is very embarrassing. The governor was the chairman of the convention committee. Diri was the chairman of the zoning committee. Even though I knew from the beginning that they were all playing games,” Wike stated.

According to Akahi News, the FCT Minister suggested that the Bayelsa governor’s resignation was part of a broader internal crisis rocking the PDP ahead of its national convention.

Diri’s Exit Shocks Party Members

Governor Douye Diri’s resignation reportedly caught several party members by surprise, given his high-profile involvement in party activities and his perceived loyalty to the PDP since assuming office.

As the chairman of the zoning committee, Diri was responsible for making crucial recommendations regarding the party’s power rotation arrangements — a key factor in shaping the outcome of the upcoming convention.

Sources close to the PDP national secretariat told Akahi News that Diri’s departure could trigger a ripple effect, with potential implications for the party’s unity and strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Internal Tensions Deepen Ahead of Convention

Political observers believe that the Bayelsa governor’s resignation further exposes widening divisions within the PDP, already strained by leadership disputes and defections to the ruling party.

Wike, who has remained one of the most vocal figures within the PDP bloc now aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, has frequently criticised the opposition’s handling of internal matters.

“The party leadership has not been honest with itself. When you play politics of deceit, these are the kinds of outcomes you get,” Wike reportedly remarked in response to questions on the PDP’s readiness for the upcoming convention.

Analysts: PDP Faces Test of Credibility

Analysts who spoke with Akahi News noted that Diri’s resignation — coming just weeks before a major convention — is a serious credibility test for the PDP’s leadership and cohesion.

One Abuja-based political analyst, Dr. Chukwudi Amadi, said: “Governor Diri’s resignation at such a critical time raises questions about the party’s internal trust structure. If key figures are walking away, it means there’s a deeper issue the leadership is refusing to confront.”

As at press time, neither Diri nor his aides have issued an official statement explaining the reasons behind his resignation.
