27-Year-Old Woman Dies After Car Plunges Into Lagos Lagoon From Third Mainland Bridge
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A tragic accident claimed the life of 27-year-old entrepreneur, Aisha Maikudi Ibrahim, on Saturday after her car reportedly somersaulted and plunged into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge.

Family sources told journalists that Ms Ibrahim, who lived in Gbagada, was returning from an event in Ikoyi where she worked as a vendor when the crash occurred. Her aunt, Hadiza Oyewumi, revealed that she had called her mother around 1 a.m. to say she would be home in 20 minutes. However, by 2 a.m., her phone became unreachable, sparking fears that eventually led her family to the accident scene.
On their way to the Island, the family met emergency officials and bystanders gathered at the bridge. They later confirmed the crashed vehicle belonged to Aisha after recognising the plate number.
What has caused additional grief for the family is the delayed rescue response. According to Ms Oyewumi, officials from LASTMA and marine police made calls but failed to take immediate action. It was Aisha’s father who eventually negotiated with local divers, who demanded ₦400,000 before retrieving her body. Her remains were recovered between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and buried immediately according to Islamic rites.
“The circumstances of the crash remain unclear, but what is more painful is the response that followed. Preparedness and compassion could have made all the difference,” Ms Oyewumi lamented, urging the Lagos State Government to properly equip emergency responders and integrate trained divers into official rescue operations.
LASTMA Reacts
When contacted, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, Taofeek Adebayo, said he was unaware of the incident but promised to investigate. However, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Director, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that Aisha’s body was recovered lifeless during a coordinated rescue effort and handed over to the police and her family.
She explained that it was a lone accident involving a Toyota Camry with registration number LSR 384 BE, which plunged into the lagoon with Aisha as the only occupant.
Similar Incidents
This is not the first tragedy of its kind. In April 2024, an 18-seater bus veered off the bridge at the Adeniyi Adele axis, inward Lagos Island, hitting the railings before plunging into the lagoon, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The latest incident has reignited calls for enhanced safety measures and improved emergency response on Lagos’ busiest bridge.
