How the Edo Tanker Explosion Happened

The incident reportedly began when a petrol-laden tanker fell near Oluku Market, spilling its contents onto the road and surrounding drainage channels.

According to eyewitness accounts, residents and passers-by subsequently gathered around the fallen tanker, with some attempting to scoop the spilled petrol despite the obvious danger.

The situation reportedly escalated several hours later when the tanker burst into flames, triggering a massive inferno that spread rapidly through the surrounding area.

The fire engulfed nearby shops and vehicles, while people caught within the affected area sustained varying degrees of burns.

One eyewitness, who admitted that he had also been scooping petrol before the explosion, reportedly escaped after a soldier warned him about the danger posed by the crowd and the prevailing weather conditions.

The witness said the tanker exploded shortly after he turned away following the warning.

The incident has once again highlighted the potentially fatal consequences of gathering around fallen fuel tankers to collect spilled petroleum products.

Several Victims Rushed to Hospital

Victims of the explosion were reportedly taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for emergency medical treatment.

The hospital’s emergency and burns units were mobilised to attend to the injured, with its Chief Medical Director, Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu, reportedly involved in coordinating the emergency response.

Initial reports gave varying figures for the number of people injured, with some accounts reporting at least 10 victims and others putting the number at 11.

The Edo State Police Command subsequently confirmed that eight people sustained varying degrees of burns, according to a report published on Friday, October 16.

The discrepancies in the figures underline the importance of relying on verified official updates as authorities continue to establish the full casualty count.

Reports of deaths also emerged after the explosion. However, the full number of fatalities had not been conclusively established in the available reports.

Market, Vehicles and Other Property Destroyed

Beyond the human casualties, the explosion caused extensive damage to property around Oluku Market.

Shops and market stalls were consumed by the fire, while vehicles caught within the affected area were also destroyed.

Reports indicated that the losses included commercial goods, food items and other belongings belonging to traders and residents.

The destruction has raised concerns about the economic consequences for affected traders, many of whom depend on their daily sales to support their families.

For business owners whose shops and goods were destroyed, rebuilding may require substantial financial resources, particularly where savings, merchandise and business equipment were lost in the inferno.

The incident also renewed concerns about the risks associated with commercial activities close to major roads and drainage channels, particularly when emergency situations involving petroleum products occur.

Police, FRSC and Fire Service Respond

Security and emergency personnel were deployed to the scene to manage the situation, control traffic and assist with the response.

The Edo State Police Command said officers, including personnel from the Ekiadolor Division and other operational units, were deployed following the incident.

The police also reported efforts to evacuate members of the public from the affected area and prevent people from scooping fuel from the fallen tanker.

Personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Edo State Fire Service and other relevant agencies were also reported to have participated in the emergency response.

The incident disrupted activities around the affected section of the Benin-Lagos Expressway as emergency workers dealt with the aftermath of the explosion.

Why Scooping Fuel From Fallen Tankers Is Dangerous

The Edo tragedy has once again drawn attention to the dangers of attempting to collect petrol from fallen tankers.

Petrol is highly flammable, and its vapour can ignite when exposed to a suitable ignition source. A spill can therefore create a dangerous environment even when no fire is immediately visible.

People who approach a fallen tanker may also be exposed to sudden fires, explosions and rapidly spreading flames, leaving little opportunity to escape.

The presence of a large crowd can make evacuation more difficult, while nearby shops, vehicles and other combustible materials may allow a fire to spread beyond the initial accident scene.

Safety agencies have repeatedly warned members of the public to keep away from fallen fuel tankers and leave the handling of spilled petroleum products to trained emergency personnel.

The risks are not limited to sunny weather. A fuel spill remains dangerous under different weather conditions, and the absence of an immediate fire does not mean that the area is safe.

Residents should promptly alert emergency services, maintain a safe distance and avoid any attempt to scoop or transfer spilled fuel.

A Call for Stronger Public Safety Measures

The explosion has renewed calls for stronger public education on fuel tanker accidents, faster emergency responses and more effective enforcement of safety measures around hazardous spills.

While the circumstances surrounding individual tanker accidents may differ, the dangers associated with gathering around spilled petroleum products remain significant.

Authorities and transport stakeholders also face the continuing challenge of improving tanker safety, enforcing roadworthiness standards and ensuring that emergency procedures are followed when fuel-carrying vehicles crash.

At the community level, public awareness campaigns could help residents understand that the apparent opportunity to obtain free fuel can carry a devastating cost.

The Edo incident demonstrates how a road accident can quickly escalate into a wider disaster when a hazardous spill attracts a crowd.

The fuel tanker explosion at Oluku Market in Edo State has left a trail of destruction, with several people injured, reports of fatalities and businesses and vehicles damaged by the inferno.

As authorities work to establish the definitive casualty figures, the tragedy serves as another warning about the dangers of approaching fallen fuel tankers to collect spilled petrol.

The priority remains the treatment of victims, support for affected families and traders, and a thorough assessment of the incident.

Preventing similar disasters will require a combination of responsible public behaviour, effective emergency management and stronger commitment to road and fuel-handling safety.
