Actress Bimbo Akintola Sparks Outrage With Bold Claims on Infidelity and Polygamy
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Veteran Nollywood actress, Bimbo Akintola, has stirred heated debate across Nigeria after declaring that infidelity is deeply embedded in the country’s cultural fabric. Her comments, made during a recent podcast conversation with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, have since gone viral, drawing sharp criticism and mixed reactions online.

“90 to 99% of Men Cheat by Default” — Akintola
Responding to a fan’s question about dealing with an unfaithful partner, Akintola insisted that cheating is not a new or isolated issue, but one that has been normalised for generations through polygamous traditions.
“The majority of our men cheat. Your father cheated, sir. Sorry, I’m sorry. Your grandfather did. Polygamy, polygamy. Yes, my father has two wives,” she said bluntly.
Akintola further argued that monogamy is a foreign concept in African society, claiming many men simply mirror the behaviour of their fathers and older male figures.
“Some men grew up following their fathers to visit girlfriends. I don’t know where this idea of fidelity came from in Africa. The reality is, 90% of our men cheat — it’s ingrained in them,” she added.
“Even Beyoncé Stayed With Jay-Z”
The actress also challenged women to adjust their expectations in relationships instead of chasing ideals shaped by Western culture and media.
“You leave one man because he cheated, and go to another, same issue. Jay-Z cheated on Beyoncé. Did she leave? No. Let’s be honest about the reality we live in,” Akintola remarked.
Public Reactions: Divided Opinions
Akahi News gathered that Akintola’s remarks have polarised Nigerians online. While some praised her for speaking what they consider “uncomfortable truths,” others accused her of enabling toxic behaviour and excusing men from accountability.
An Instagram user, @omah_licha_nwa, commented:
“Lol these are the enablers of bad behavior that we keep talking about, but ok, go off sis 👏.”
Another user, @bjay_9ja, wrote:
“But who fears DNA tests more?”
The conversation has since reignited long-standing debates on fidelity, cultural norms, and the evolving expectations of relationships in modern Nigeria.
