Anambra Youths Rally in Support of Agunaechemba, Warn Against Politicising Security

The youth wing of the Anambra State Town Union Council (ASTUC) on Saturday staged a solidarity rally in Awka, declaring firm support for the continuation of Agunaechemba and Udo Ga-Achi operatives, while cautioning politicians against politicising security matters in the state.
This demonstration came a day after a protest led by Young Progressive Party (YPP) governorship candidate, Sir Paul Chukwuma, who had called for the disbandment of Agunaechemba and the Special Anambra Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), citing unprofessional conduct by some members.
Youths Back Soludo, Condemn Misconduct
The counter-rally, which drew participants from all 179 communities in Anambra State, saw youths march peacefully through major streets of Awka to the new government house, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs for the security outfits and Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s re-election bid.
Addressing the crowd, Hon. Ken Okoli, ASTUC youth president, condemned the actions of eight Agunaechemba operatives caught on video assaulting a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ms Jennifer Elohor. He commended the state government for dismissing the errant officers and handing them over to the police for prosecution, while stressing that isolated misconduct should not warrant disbanding the entire security structure.
“We can’t allow Agunaechemba and Udo Ga-Achi to be disbanded by the mistakes of some members. The Anambra State Homeland Security law has empowered them to provide solutions to security challenges. We support the prosecution of those who erred, but security must remain intact,” Okoli said.
He further warned that any attempt to weaken the state’s security apparatus could embolden opposition politicians to exploit insecurity ahead of the November 8 governorship election.
Soludo Reassures Citizens on Security
Receiving the protesters on behalf of Governor Soludo, Chief of Staff Sir Ernest Ezeajughi thanked the youths for their show of confidence in the administration. He emphasised that the Soludo government had made significant strides in security and other key sectors, urging all stakeholders to resist attempts to politicise insecurity.
“The governor is doing very well, especially in the area of security. We have transformed various sectors. Stakeholders should join hands in tackling insecurities instead of politicising them,” Ezeajughi said.
He called on the youths to mobilise across all 21 local government areas and 326 wards in Anambra to sustain support for the government’s efforts in making the state more secure and liveable.
With security a central issue ahead of the November polls, the solidarity rally underscores growing tensions between those advocating for reform and others backing continuity of the state’s community-based security model.
