Wike’s Aide Stirs Debate Over Peter Obi’s Condolence Visit to Late Goalkeeper Peter Rufai’s Family

Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ignited controversy after questioning Peter Obi’s condolence visit to the family of late Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Obi, visited the Rufai family on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at their Amuwo Odofin, Lagos residence—one day after the football legend was laid to rest. He was accompanied by former international, Sylvanus Okpala, where he spent time with the bereaved family, offered prayers, and signed the condolence register.

Explaining the timing of his visit, Obi stated that he only became aware of Rufai’s burial date while in Abuja and immediately flew to Lagos the following morning to pay his respects.

However, Olayinka took to social media shortly after the visit, casting doubts on Obi’s sincerity. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:

“Peter AGBỌ́TIKÚYỌ̀ Obi. Peter Rufai died on July 3, 2025, he is paying condolence visit on August 23, 2025, just because of what Taribo West said. Just anything for the camera and media shaaa.”

The remark appeared to suggest Obi’s visit was triggered by earlier criticism from former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West, who had faulted the Nigerian Football Federation and other stakeholders for their silence following Rufai’s death.

Olayinka’s statement drew mixed reactions online. Critics of Obi aligned with his view, accusing the former Anambra governor of leveraging the visit for political optics. Conversely, supporters defended Obi, describing his action as genuine and timely, especially given his explanation.

The development has reignited discussions on the intersection of politics, public perception, and personal gestures in Nigeria’s public space.
