Former Vice President Dismisses Fears of Ethnic Domination
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has assured the Yoruba people that their interests will take a prominent place in his administration’s policies if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking through his media consultant, Kola Johnson, in Abuja on Thursday, Atiku dismissed suggestions that his presidency might lead to Hausa/Fulani domination, describing such fears as “baseless and unfounded.”
“The entire Yoruba stock is my extended family and in-laws,” he said, citing his personal and marital ties to the South-West.
Marital Ties Strengthen Political Connection
Atiku highlighted his long-standing connection to the Yoruba through his first wife, Titi, an Ijesha-born woman whom he married in the 1970s.
“I count myself extremely lucky to have a wife from this noble ethnic group. This bond makes the Yoruba my family in every sense,” he said.
Revealing more about his family life, Atiku disclosed that he has four children with his wife Titi, now in her seventies, and that his children sometimes call him “Baba Rere,” meaning “good father.”
“My wife has been my Jewel of Inestimable Value, and the Yoruba have always held a special place in my heart,” he added.
Pledge to Give South-West a Central Role
Promising inclusivity, Atiku vowed to place the South-West at the centre of his administration’s policymaking if elected in 2027.
“It is for this reason that the interests of the Yoruba will always occupy a topmost place in my governance. The fear of Hausa/Fulani domination simply does not arise,” he stated.
Atiku, known for his long-standing presidential ambitions, was the runner-up in the 2023 general election won by President Bola Tinubu. His latest declaration comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 polls.
Advocating a United Nigeria
Insisting that he is “highly detribalised,” Atiku stressed his history of working with people across religious and ethnic lines long before entering politics.
“Anyone who knows me will attest that I have always related easily with people of all tribes and backgrounds. I believe in a united Nigeria where every region’s interest is protected,” he concluded.
As 2027 approaches, observers note that Atiku’s latest remarks could be aimed at strengthening his political base in the South-West while countering narratives of ethnic bias.
