Datti Baba-Ahmed Accuses APC of Exploiting Insecurity for Political Gains

During an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has deliberately used insecurity as a political weapon to gain and retain power in Nigeria.
His comments followed recent remarks by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who claimed that the Federal Government was paying bandits under a “non-kinetic” approach to address security challenges.
Datti’s Allegation Against APC
Speaking on the programme, Baba-Ahmed insisted that insecurity in Nigeria was not accidental but a carefully orchestrated tool dating back to the 2015 elections. He argued that the APC used heightened insecurity to discredit the previous administration and has continued to manipulate the situation for political advantage.
“Insecurity has become part of APC’s identity,” he asserted, linking El-Rufai’s statements to what he described as the ruling party’s longstanding tactics.
FG, Military Dismiss Bandit Payment Claims
The Federal Government, through the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), swiftly denied El-Rufai’s allegations, describing them as baseless. The military also refuted claims of paying bandits, clarifying that initiatives like Operation Safe Corridor were designed for rehabilitation, not financial inducements.
Officials insisted that the government’s security strategy involves a combination of military offensives and community engagement, with tangible successes recorded in several regions.
Calls for Investigation
Baba-Ahmed, however, maintained that El-Rufai’s claims were too serious to ignore. He urged authorities to question the former governor, suggesting that those involved in creating or sustaining insecurity should be held accountable regardless of political affiliation.
“The APC cannot absolve itself of responsibility; insecurity has been part of its game plan from the beginning,” he declared.

Analysts believe the unfolding debate highlights growing political tension ahead of future elections, with accusations of insecurity manipulation threatening to deepen partisan divides in the country.
