A Port Harcourt–based medical doctor and pastor has been arrested by security operatives over an alleged plot to assassinate the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in a development that has further heightened political tension in Rivers State.

Arrest Following Intelligence Intercept
According to reports by The Leader Nigeria, operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) arrested Dr. Tombari Joseph Gbeneol, a medical doctor and founder of Life Forte Chapel Church, after intelligence reports pointed to a potential threat to the minister’s life.
Akahi News gathered that the arrest followed the interception of a phone conversation allegedly involving Gbeneol and Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the immediate past Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG). Security sources claimed the discussion centred on plans to engage foreign nationals to execute the alleged assassination.
Alleged Funding Link and Security Concerns
Sources familiar with the investigation disclosed that the suspects reportedly discussed sourcing funds to carry out the plan, with claims that support would be sought from Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. A senior security official, quoted by The Leader Nigeria, described the intercepted call as “a grave national security threat,” prompting swift action by the IRT.
Operatives, led by CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, reportedly moved in quickly, arresting Gbeneol, who has remained in custody for about two weeks. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to apprehend Danagogo, who is said to have gone underground since the allegations surfaced.
Police Confirmation and Ongoing Investigation
Confirming the arrest, the Nigeria Police Force, through its spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the suspect is in custody and investigations are ongoing. However, no further details were disclosed.
Security officials also indicated that detectives are working to determine the full scope of the alleged plot, including the possible involvement of other accomplices.
Political Implications in Rivers State
The arrest comes against the backdrop of intense political rivalry in Rivers State, particularly between Minister Wike and Governor Fubara. Observers believe the development could further complicate the already strained political climate in the state, with wider implications for security and governance.
As investigations continue, authorities have urged the public to remain calm while the law takes its course.
