Fire Guts Recycling Site, Spreads to Homes and Church in Lagos
A fire outbreak on Monday afternoon razed an open-air recycling site and spread to nearby buildings along Pipeline Road, off Ekoro Road, Abule Egba, Lagos State, triggering panic among residents and emergency responders.
Fire Breaks Out, Emergency Teams Respond Swiftly
Akahi News learnt that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call at about 1:08 p.m., prompting immediate deployment of firefighters from the Agege and Abesan fire stations to the affected area.

According to preliminary reports gathered by Akahi News, the inferno started from an open space used for local recycling activities before rapidly spreading to a nearby residential bungalow and a small church located within the vicinity.
One Woman Treated for Shock, No Casualties Recorded
Although the fire caused significant property damage, emergency officials confirmed that no lives were lost. However, one adult female reportedly suffered shock during the incident and was promptly attended to by emergency responders at the scene. She was later stabilised.
Residents in the area were said to have fled their homes temporarily as thick smoke and flames engulfed parts of the neighbourhood, raising fears of further destruction before firefighters gained control.
Fire Contained, Investigation Underway
Confirming the incident, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, stated that the fire was successfully contained, preventing it from spreading further into the densely populated area.
“The fire has been brought under control, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident,” she said.
Mrs Adeseye reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Lagos State, urging residents and business operators to strictly comply with fire safety regulations, especially in areas prone to open burning and recycling activities.
Growing Concerns Over Fire Safety in Urban Areas
Observers note that recurring fire outbreaks linked to informal recycling and industrial activities continue to raise serious concerns about safety standards in urban communities. Analysts believe stricter enforcement of safety guidelines and better monitoring of such sites could help prevent similar incidents in the future.
As investigations continue, Akahi News gathered that authorities are expected to review safety practices around informal recycling operations in residential areas to minimise risks to lives and property.
