German Nurse Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Killing 10 Patients, Attempting to Murder 27 Others

Court Finds Nurse Guilty of “Particular Severity of Guilt”

A German court has sentenced a palliative care nurse to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of murdering ten patients and attempting to kill twenty-seven others at a hospital in Wuerselen, western Germany.

According to reports, the unnamed man — who worked mostly on overnight shifts — injected his predominantly elderly patients with painkillers and sedatives, including morphine and midazolam, allegedly to make his workload lighter.

The offences were committed between December 2023 and May 2024, and prosecutors described the crimes as both “calculated” and “cold-hearted.”

Crimes Spanned Months of Night Shifts

Investigations revealed that the nurse had been employed at the hospital since 2020, after completing his nursing training in 2007. Prosecutors told the Aachen court that he often displayed irritation and a lack of empathy toward patients requiring intensive care, accusing him of acting as “a master of life and death.”

The court heard that he injected excessive doses of sedatives and painkillers into patients who needed constant attention, causing fatal overdoses in several cases. He was arrested in 2024, following a hospital audit that raised suspicions over the sudden and repeated deaths of patients under his supervision.

The presiding judge ruled that the convict’s actions demonstrated “particular severity of guilt,” a designation in German law that effectively bars early release after 15 years, even for life sentences.

Ongoing Investigations and Possible New Charges

Prosecutors confirmed that exhumations are underway to determine whether more patients may have been killed during his tenure. If additional evidence emerges, the nurse could face fresh charges and another trial.

Authorities described the investigation as “complex and sensitive,” given that many of the deceased were elderly or terminally ill, making it harder to determine cause of death.

Parallels with Niels Högel’s Killing Spree

Observers have drawn parallels between this case and that of Niels Högel, a former German nurse who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 for murdering 85 patients at two northern German hospitals.

Högel, regarded as Germany’s most prolific serial killer in modern history, was found to have administered lethal doses of heart medication between 1999 and 2005, claiming he wanted to “test his resuscitation skills.”

The Wuerselen case has reignited public debate in Germany over hospital oversight, nurse-to-patient ratios, and psychological evaluation systems within the healthcare sector.

Calls for Reform and Accountability

German lawmakers and medical associations are now calling for stricter background checks, better psychological monitoring, and enhanced supervision in hospitals to prevent similar tragedies.

Families of the victims have also urged authorities to ensure that “such monstrous acts” never occur again in the country’s healthcare system.

As investigations continue, the convicted nurse’s legal team has indicated plans to appeal the verdict, though experts say the severity of the crimes makes a successful appeal unlikely.
