Panic as Building Under Construction Caves In
A three-storey building with four additional suspended floors has collapsed in Awka, the Anambra State capital, leaving many feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, 25th September 2025, at a construction site located behind the Anambra State House of Assembly, off Ekwueme Square, Okpuno.
Eyewitnesses told Akahi News that the building suddenly caved in while construction workers were on site, sending residents and passers-by into panic.
Eyewitnesses Describe Terrifying Scene
“It collapsed without warning,” one eyewitness recounted. “Artisans were working on the roof when the entire structure gave way. Nobody knows exactly how many people are trapped, but several workers were inside when it happened.”
Reports indicate that initial rescue efforts were delayed as emergency officials awaited heavy-duty equipment to begin clearing the debris.
Preliminary Investigation Points to Structural Failure
Officials from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Materials Testing Department have already launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.
Engr. Victor Meju, Chairman of COREN-ERM in Anambra State, confirmed to Akahi News that preliminary findings suggest a possible foundation failure and poor concrete mixture.
“This was a six-floor private building, still at the roofing stage. Our early assessment indicates a vertically complete collapse, likely due to structural defects,” Meju explained.
Rescue Operations Underway
The Ministry of Housing and the Awka Capital Territory Development Agency (ACTDA) have mobilised emergency teams to the scene to commence rescue operations and ensure public safety.
As of the time of this report, casualty figures remain unknown. Residents have expressed concerns over the frequency of building collapses in parts of Anambra and other Nigerian states, calling for stricter enforcement of building safety regulations.
