MTN Nigeria Schedules Service Disruption Across Three States for Fiber Maintenance

By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
MTN Nigeria has announced a planned network service disruption that will affect customers in Adamawa, Borno, and Kano States. The disruption, scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 2025, is part of an urgent effort to reroute traffic to a newly installed fiber infrastructure.
Maintenance Details and Timeline
According to information gathered by Akahi News, the exercise will last from 6:00 am to 8:00 am, affecting 101 network sites across 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs). During this period, subscribers on 2G, 3G, and 4G services may experience intermittent interruptions.
MTN explained that the intervention is necessary due to previous damages on existing fiber lines, prompting the installation of a new stretch along the AFCOT–Bawo Village corridor in Adamawa State. The rerouting exercise will ensure long-term service stability. The operator further noted that daylight hours were chosen for the upgrade because of security considerations along the affected route.
Areas to be Affected
Akahi News gathered that the disruption will cover the following LGAs:
- Adamawa State: Girei, Song, Mubi North, Hong, Gombi, Fufore, Mubi South, Madagali, Michika, Maiha, Chibok, and Yola North.
- Borno State: Askira/Uba and Shani.
- Kano State: Nasarawa LGA.
A Wider Telecom Sector Challenge
The temporary outage highlights a broader challenge faced by telecom providers in Nigeria. Akahi News learnt that frequent fiber cuts—caused by construction works, vandalism, and poor stakeholder coordination—have been a major source of disruption nationwide.
- Airtel Nigeria recently disclosed that it suffers about 43 fiber cuts daily, resulting in widespread service instability.
- The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has also documented several outage reports, ordering telecom firms to compensate affected customers in some cases.
These issues continue to pose risks to communication, business transactions, emergency responses, and overall digital connectivity.
