Tinubu Launches Personal Income Tax Calculator Ahead of 2026 Reforms
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled a Personal Income Tax Calculator designed to help Nigerians understand the impact of the new tax reforms signed into law by his administration. The reforms, which will take effect from January 2026, aim to build a fairer and more transparent tax system that protects low-income earners while ensuring equity in contributions from higher earners.

The President made the announcement on Friday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, stressing that the new tool will enable citizens to compare their current tax obligations with the reformed system, ensuring clarity and transparency.
What the New Personal Income Tax Calculator Offers
According to Akahi News, the Personal Income Tax Calculator allows individuals to input their earnings and see how much tax they would pay under the new structure compared to the current system. This is expected to demystify taxation for Nigerians, particularly workers who often find the tax process complex and unclear.
President Tinubu explained that the calculator was created to reassure citizens that the new framework:
- Protects low-income earners by reducing their tax burden
- Promotes progressivity by ensuring those who earn more pay a fairer share
- Simplifies compliance for individuals and businesses
- Guarantees transparency in how tax rates apply across income brackets
Tinubu’s Message on Fairness and Hope
While unveiling the tool, the President emphasised that the essence of the reforms is not to punish citizens but to create an equitable tax system that fosters economic growth and fairness.
“A fair tax system must never punish poverty or weigh down the most vulnerable. With the new tax laws I recently signed, taking effect from January 2026, we have lifted this burden and created a path of equity, fairness, and true redistribution in our economy.”
He added that the reforms represent his administration’s commitment to restoring trust in governance and rebuilding public confidence in national institutions.
Tinubu also urged Nigerians to embrace the changes as part of a broader push for economic renewal, stating:
“Together, we are renewing hope in the Nigeria of our dreams. Take a bet on our country. Bet on Nigeria to work for you, your family, and your community.”
Why the Tax Reforms Matter
Akahi News learnt that Nigeria’s tax system has long been criticised for being inefficient, complex, and regressive in its impact on low-income earners. By rolling out this reform package, the government hopes to broaden the tax base, improve compliance, and reduce overreliance on oil revenue.
Economic analysts have noted that a fair tax regime is crucial for sustainable growth, especially in a country where inequality remains a major challenge. The ability for citizens to independently calculate and verify their tax obligations is seen as a step towards greater accountability and transparency in public finance management.
Looking Ahead to January 2026
With the reforms scheduled to take effect in January 2026, stakeholders across the economic spectrum — from salary earners to entrepreneurs — are expected to closely monitor how the changes will impact disposable income and business operations.
The launch of the calculator is regarded as an early opportunity for Nigerians to familiarise themselves with the upcoming changes and prepare adequately. Experts also suggest that digital tools like this could significantly improve voluntary compliance by removing confusion and mistrust around taxation.
As the countdown to 2026 begins, the Tinubu administration is banking on these reforms to establish a more just and efficient tax system for Nigeria. With the Personal Income Tax Calculator now accessible to the public, citizens are encouraged to explore the tool, assess their obligations, and engage with the government’s vision of a fairer economy.
