NAFDAC Issues Public Alert Over Falsified Postinor-2 Batches in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised alarm over the circulation of falsified batches of Postinor-2 (Levonorgestrel 0.75mg), a popular emergency contraceptive pill, across Nigeria.

In a statement released on Monday, NAFDAC confirmed that the counterfeit products, identified as Type 1 and Type 2 falsified batches, were detected following reports from the authorised importer, Society for Family Health (SFH), which clarified that it did not import those consignments.

How to Identify the Fake Batches

According to the agency, the counterfeit versions carry glaring errors that distinguish them from the genuine product. These include:

  • A misspelt verification sticker reading “Veify” instead of “Verify.”
  • Wrongly printed text at the back of the pack stating “Distnibuted in Nigeria” instead of “Distributed in Nigeria.”
  • Smaller and unclear fonts compared to the original packs.

The affected falsified products include:

  • Counterfeit Product (Type 1): Batch T36184B, manufactured August 2024, expiry August 2028.
  • Counterfeit Product (Type 2): Batch 332, manufactured March 2023, expiry February 2027.
Both carry the registration number 04-6985.

Health Risks and Public Warning

NAFDAC warned that the fake pills could contain incorrect or harmful ingredients, improper dosages of levonorgestrel, or toxic contaminants. The dangers include contraceptive failure, allergic reactions, toxic side effects, organ damage, long-term reproductive health complications, and even death.

The agency emphasised that counterfeit medicines are unregulated, untested, and unsafe, making their effectiveness impossible to guarantee.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Measures

The regulatory body confirmed that investigations are underway to trace the source of the falsified products. Zonal directors and state coordinators have been directed to intensify surveillance and mop up the fake batches nationwide.

Consumers and healthcare providers have been urged to:

  • Buy Postinor-2 only from licensed pharmacies or recognised healthcare outlets.
  • Carefully check PIN verification stickers and packaging details.
  • Report any suspected counterfeit products to NAFDAC for immediate action.

NAFDAC reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding public health while working closely with relevant agencies to curb the distribution of dangerous fake medicines.
