July 7, 2024 – Today, Rev. Fr. Peter Adeyemi delivered a compelling homily drawing from the readings Ezekiel 2:2-5, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, and Mark 6:1-6. The cleric’s message centered on the dangers of familiarity and the importance of genuine faith.
Fr. Adeyemi began by reflecting on the Gospel reading from Mark, highlighting how Jesus faced ridicule in His hometown, where people referred to Him simply as “the carpenter, the son of Mary.” This familiarity, Fr. Adeyemi pointed out, was an attempt to diminish Jesus’ divine mission. “Don’t allow familiarity to deprive you of opportunities,” he warned, emphasizing that the people’s lack of faith and general discontent hindered Jesus from performing many miracles.
He elaborated that only a few received healing because they believed in Him as the Son of God. “Jesus used His hands to bless and heal those who believed, while many of us today use ours to cause harm,” he noted, urging the congregation to reflect on their actions and attitudes.
Continuing on the theme of familiarity, Fr. Adeyemi addressed how some Catholics fail to show proper reverence for church sacramentals. He lamented that many receive the Holy Communion without truly feeling the presence of Jesus Christ and that the Sacrament of Penance is often neglected due to over-familiarity with the priest.
“God is alive and dynamic; our God is not a static God,” he proclaimed, reminding the faithful of the ever-present and active nature of the divine in their lives.
Drawing from 2 Corinthians, Fr. Adeyemi spoke about the “Pauline infirmity,” describing it as a means to keep Paul reliant on God. He contrasted this with the people of Israel who, in the time of Ezekiel, scorned God’s messages. “We must learn to depend on God fully, just as Paul did,” he urged.
