President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a sweeping reduction in the cost of kidney dialysis sessions across federal hospitals, slashing the fee from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 per session.

The announcement was made on Monday by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. According to Bwala, the initiative is part of the administration’s broader healthcare reforms aimed at alleviating the financial burden on Nigerians battling chronic illnesses.

Relief for Kidney Patients

Kidney disease has remained one of the most expensive health conditions to manage in Nigeria, with many patients unable to afford consistent treatment. Dialysis, a life-saving procedure for individuals with kidney failure, typically requires multiple sessions each week, driving costs beyond the reach of most families.

Bwala explained that the reduced rate will first be implemented in ten public hospitals, after which the programme will be expanded to federal medical centres and teaching hospitals nationwide before the end of the year.

“The development, which will first commence in ten public hospitals, will provide relief to thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related diseases, many of whom cannot pay for the dialysis,” he stated.

He added that the move reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to improving access to affordable healthcare, especially for vulnerable groups.

Expansion of Healthcare Initiatives

The dialysis subsidy comes on the heels of earlier interventions by the Tinubu administration to tackle pressing healthcare challenges. In July, the president had approved free caesarean sections for pregnant women in federal hospitals as part of efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

By cutting dialysis costs, the administration is now targeting another critical area of public health, one that has seen countless families pushed into poverty while trying to sustain long-term treatment for loved ones.

Nationwide Rollout Before Year-End

Bwala disclosed that more federal health facilities will be added to the programme before December 2025 to ensure wider access and coverage across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. He also noted that the policy would be closely monitored to ensure transparency, accountability, and direct benefit to patients.

Health experts have described the development as a game-changer for thousands of Nigerians living with chronic kidney disease, many of whom had previously abandoned treatment due to high costs.

A Step Toward Accessible Healthcare

With Nigeria facing rising cases of kidney-related illnesses linked to hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle changes, the intervention is expected to save lives and reduce the heavy out-of-pocket expenses that dominate the nation’s healthcare system.

By targeting affordability and expanding access, the policy is being viewed as part of a gradual restructuring of Nigeria’s healthcare financing model, aimed at placing patients at the centre of reforms.

For many Nigerians, the move is a welcome relief and a sign of renewed government focus on healthcare equity and social welfare.
