Two people have been confirmed dead while three others sustained injuries in a ghastly motor accident near the permanent site of Ebonyi State University, Ishieke, along the Abakaliki–Enugu Expressway. Speaking to journalists, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi State, Anthony Ogbodo, confirmed the tragic incident, attributing it to reckless driving and the partial blockage of the highway by security operatives attached to Ishieke Police Station.

“The passenger bus was coming from Otukpo, Benue State, and the truck from Enugu to Abakaliki,” Ogbodo explained. “At night, the police at that junction blocked one of the lanes. Closing one lane of the road contributed to the accident.”

According to Akahi News, the bus had 10 passengers on board — eight males and two females. Sadly, a male and a female lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment. The victims’ corpses have been deposited at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary in Abakaliki.

Residents Raise Safety Concerns

Local residents reportedly linked the recurring accidents in the area to the continuous practice of blocking one side of the expressway. Ogbodo echoed these concerns, stressing that the obstruction has created unnecessary hazards.

“Dangerous driving combined with the obstruction is a recipe for disaster,” he warned.

Call for Urgent Action

The fatal crash has reignited calls for improved road safety measures and a review of traffic control practices along the expressway, as stakeholders urge authorities to prioritise the safety of road users to prevent further tragedies.
