Statewide Effort to Reform Basic Education
In a decisive move to enhance the quality of basic education, the Cross River State Ministry of Education has commenced a comprehensive training and capacity-building workshop for inspectors under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). The programme, currently ongoing in Calabar, is being spearheaded by the Department of Quality Assurance to transition inspectors into certified Quality Assurance Evaluators.
The initiative, which cuts across all 18 Local Government Areas of the state, underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening educational monitoring and evaluation systems in line with global best practices.
Government Reiterates Commitment to Educational Reform
Declaring the workshop open at the West African People’s Institute (WAPI), Calabar, the Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Odey, represented by the Director of Higher Education, Dr. Moses Agboreyo, described the training as a turning point in the state’s education sector.
“This training is not just a formality—it is a reorientation. It marks your transition from traditional inspection roles to dynamic quality assurance responsibilities. You are being empowered to be agents of change and accountability in our schools,” Dr. Agboreyo stated.
According to Akahi News, the workshop features theoretical lectures, practical sessions, and pre-examination exercises to evaluate participants’ readiness for their new roles.
Experts Emphasise Transparency and Standards
Delivering key sessions were the Head of the Department for Quality Assurance, Mrs. Ngozi Offiong, education consultant Dr. Fanny Ekabua, and education expert Dr. Esua. Their presentations focused on frameworks, methodologies, and the core principles of educational quality assurance.
Mrs. Offiong assured participants that the process would remain merit-based.
“We are focused on competence, not favouritism. The process is transparent, and only those who meet the performance benchmarks will proceed,” she said.
Stakeholders and Participants Commend Initiative
The event was attended by major education stakeholders, including the Coordinating Supervisory Director (CSD) of the Calabar Zonal Office and Education Secretaries from Calabar South, Calabar Municipality, and Odukpani LGAs. Their presence highlighted the importance of collaborative oversight in advancing educational reforms.
Participants also expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to uphold the standards and values imparted during the training.
Broader Strategy for Improved Learning Outcomes
