Wike’s Florida Mansion Scandal: Fresh Storm as EFCC Launches Forensic Probe into Undeclared Foreign Assets
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

The political tension surrounding Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has intensified following revelations that he allegedly acquired multimillion-dollar properties in Florida, USA, which were not disclosed in his official asset declaration. The alleged scandal has triggered a forensic investigation by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and renewed calls for accountability in public office.

According to multiple investigative reports, Wike reportedly purchased a $2 million mansion in Winter Springs, Florida, in March 2025. The property — a two-storey luxury residence sitting on over 4,000 square feet — was allegedly registered under the names of his wife, Justice Eberechi Wike, and their three children.

Records suggest that the transaction was structured privately to evade direct ownership disclosure, a move that reportedly contravenes Nigeria’s asset declaration laws.

Further document reviews reveal that three additional multimillion-dollar homes located in highbrow Florida neighbourhoods were also purchased between 2021 and 2023, using cash transactions. These properties were later transferred through quitclaim deeds executed by Justice Wike — a move anti-corruption observers say might have been designed to obscure ownership and distance the minister from the assets.

⚖️ CCB and EFCC Take Action

Sources close to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) confirmed that Wike recently attempted to amend his original asset declaration to include the foreign properties after they were exposed by investigative journalists.

However, the CCB reportedly informed him that his original declaration had already been forwarded to the EFCC for verification.

A senior CCB official told Metro Daily that the move was routine but added:

“When a declaration has been transmitted for verification, it is out of our immediate control. The EFCC now handles forensic analysis of ownership details and financial flows.”

According to sources, the EFCC is now scrutinising Wike’s financial trail, including foreign wire transfers, property acquisition methods, and any link to public funds.

🔍 Civil Society and Public Outcry

The allegations have provoked sharp reactions from civil society organisations (CSOs), anti-corruption campaigners, and governance advocacy groups.

In a joint statement, a coalition of NGOs urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to demonstrate zero tolerance for corruption, regardless of political affiliation. They emphasised that public trust in anti-corruption institutions would erode if high-profile figures like Wike were allowed to escape scrutiny.

A senior member of Transparency Monitor Africa commented:

“If these allegations are proven true, it would represent one of the most audacious cases of asset concealment by a serving public officer. Nigeria cannot afford selective justice.”

🗣️ Wike’s Defence: “A Political Witch-Hunt”

In response, Wike’s camp has vehemently denied all allegations, describing them as politically motivated attacks orchestrated by his adversaries.

A close aide to the minister said:

“This is nothing but a smear campaign. The minister has served Nigeria with distinction and has nothing to hide. Those spreading these lies should present verifiable evidence instead of baseless accusations.”

Wike himself reportedly told associates that he was being targeted because of his growing political influence and his outspoken style in the Federal Executive Council.

However, documentary evidence obtained from US property registries appears to contradict his denial — a development analysts say may complicate his legal and political future.

🧩 Akahi News Insight: A Test for Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Resolve

Beyond the headlines, the unfolding saga raises critical questions about transparency and ethics in Nigerian governance.

If verified, the case against Wike underscores how public officials continue to exploit weak asset verification systems to stash wealth abroad — a recurring theme in Nigeria’s corruption narrative.

Moreover, the controversy tests the institutional independence of the EFCC and CCB, both of which have often faced accusations of selective prosecution.

Analysts warn that the credibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive will hinge on how decisively — and impartially — these agencies handle Wike’s case.

“This investigation is not just about Wike; it’s about whether Nigeria truly has the courage to hold its political elites accountable,” said political analyst Dr. Eje Ogbemudia.

🔮 What Lies Ahead

For now, the EFCC has not released an official statement on the progress of its forensic probe. But insiders confirm that investigators are tracing financial flows between Nigeria and the United States, with a focus on potential money laundering, asset concealment, and abuse of public office.

If indicted, Wike could face prosecution under the Code of Conduct Act, confiscation of undeclared assets, and possible disqualification from public office.

Until then, the embattled minister stands at the centre of what could become one of Nigeria’s most consequential corruption investigations in recent years.
