Nigerian Senator Backs Trump’s Call, Says Nigeria Cannot Yet Account For Leah Sharibu, Other Chibok Schoolgirls

Senator Dickson Endorses Trump’s “Wake-Up Call” on Nigeria’s Security Crisis

Governor of Bayelsa State and serving Senator, Seriake Dickson, has thrown his weight behind former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks on the spate of killings and insecurity in Nigeria. The senator described Trump’s stance as “a wake-up call to action,” urging Nigerian authorities to face the grim realities of terrorism and insecurity that have plagued the nation for over a decade.

In a statement issued on Thursday and titled “Alleged Genocide: My Stance On President Trump’s Statement,” Dickson stressed the need to uphold Nigeria’s sovereignty while fostering international collaboration to defeat terrorism.

“I wish to state, firstly, that Nigeria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions must be respected by all. At the same time, I fully support any collaborative action aimed at eradicating the murderous bands of terrorists who have wantonly slaughtered thousands of our countrymen and women — Christians, Muslims, and people of other faiths alike,” he said.

Senator Dickson lamented that both Christians and Muslims have fallen victim to terrorist attacks, which have left indelible scars on Nigeria’s national psyche.

He recalled that extremist groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, ISIS, and al-Qaeda have “wreaked unimaginable havoc” across the country for nearly 15 years, introducing suicide bombing and mass abductions that shook global conscience.

“Places of worship — both churches and mosques — as well as palaces and traditional rulers have not been spared in their bloodbath. School children have been kidnapped, killed, or forcefully married off,” Dickson decried.

The senator drew attention to the lingering tragedy of Leah Sharibu and several Chibok schoolgirls, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

“Till today, Nigeria has not fully accounted for the whereabouts of many of these students — for instance, Leah Sharibu and some Chibok girls remain missing,” he added.

Akahi News gathered that despite years of government interventions, several territories in Borno, Zamfara, and Katsina States reportedly remain under the control of armed groups who impose illegal taxes and operate parallel administrations.

“No Nation Can Confront Terrorism in Isolation” — Dickson

Describing the current state of insecurity as an assault on Nigeria’s sovereignty, Senator Dickson asserted that Trump’s comments should not be viewed as interference but rather as a necessary alarm for decisive action.

“This is a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and should not be tolerated any further. President Trump’s statement is a wake-up call to action,” he stated.

He disclosed that the Nigerian Senate has repeatedly raised concerns about worsening insecurity nationwide, noting that reports of killings and attacks dominate Senate sessions weekly.

“Hardly a week passes without a member of the Senate drawing attention to reports of killings and attacks on villages in one constituency or the other,” he said.

Call for International Collaboration and Policy Reform

Senator Dickson revealed that the Senate recently proposed a National Security Summit and plans to dispatch “a non-partisan team of experts and statesmen to Washington D.C.” to discuss new security frameworks.

He also criticised the previous administration led by late President Muhammadu Buhari, alleging that policies of religious imbalance within the security architecture deepened distrust.

“Buhari’s policy of appointing mostly Muslims to head all the security services during his eight years in office further worsened these perceptions,” he said.

Calling on President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate strategic diplomacy, Dickson appealed for closer cooperation with the United States and other global allies.

“We need help! No nation can confront terrorism in isolation. I urge President Tinubu to collaborate with President Donald Trump, the U.S. Government, and other allies and friends of Nigeria to flush out these marauding terrorists,” he declared.

The senator further urged the immediate appointment of ambassadors to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign policy efforts, adding:

“This anomaly should be corrected as soon as possible to enable our country maximise its diplomatic resources and options.”

Concluding his statement, Dickson offered a heartfelt prayer: “May God help Nigeria.”

Background: Trump’s Controversial Remarks and Global Reaction

As Akahi News earlier reported, Donald Trump’s recent comments alleging “mass killings” and “religious genocide” in Nigeria sparked widespread debate. The former U.S. leader warned that America may take “decisive military action” if Nigeria fails to protect its citizens, a declaration that has since divided opinion both at home and abroad.

While some Nigerian leaders dismissed Trump’s threat as meddling in internal affairs, others — including Senator Dickson — have interpreted it as a necessary global reminder of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and humanitarian crisis.
