Wike Denies Plans for Parallel PDP Convention, Questions Legitimacy of Ibadan Meeting

By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has denied speculations that he is planning a parallel convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has not officially met to approve any convention.

Wike made the clarification during an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Politics Today, where he was confronted with questions about his alleged rejection of the party’s scheduled convention in Ibadan.

When asked if he would attend the Ibadan convention, Wike dismissed the claim, stating:

CRUSH OAU POST UTME, OAU PRE-DEGREE, OAU JUPEB At Akahi Tutors, Ile-Ife. Call 08038644328.

“NEC has not sat. As a NEC member I have not been told and nobody has invited me for NEC meeting for me to say that NEC has held a meeting. If a few people who work as a team say they have held a NEC meeting, okay, so be it.”

Pressed further by Okinbaloye on whether he was planning an alternative convention, Wike retorted:

A man dressed in white with a red traditional hat is speaking passionately at a podium, gesturing with his right hand.

“How can you say I am planning? Planning to do what? I am not aware there is any convention in Ibadan.”

The minister maintained that decisions taken outside of NEC cannot be regarded as binding on all members, thereby casting doubt on the legitimacy of the proposed Ibadan gathering.

Wike’s comments are the latest in a series of internal wranglings within the PDP, with questions over party leadership and unity dominating political discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts believe his remarks could heighten existing divisions within the opposition party, especially as loyalists await clarity on the NEC’s official stance regarding the convention.
